Science in Design to Host October Symposium on Interior Design’s Role in Health and Well-Being

Science in Design will present a full-day symposium titled “When Design Heals: How Interior Design Shapes Health” on Friday, October 24, 2025, during the Fall High Point Furniture Market. The event will be held at Congdon Yards and is supported by High Point by Design.

The symposium will feature presentations from scholars, academics, and professionals in neuroaesthetics, biophilic design, and design science. Topics will include the effects of fractal patterning on well-being, the psychological impact of lighting, and the health benefits of nature-inspired environments.

In addition to scientific insights, the event will include business-focused sessions designed for interior designers and home furnishings professionals. Attendees will explore how to apply design science concepts in branding, marketing, and client communication.

Participants will also have opportunities to engage with faculty from the Science in Design Certification program, offering further guidance on applying research-based design principles in professional practice.

“As the dialogue between science and design deepens, we’re witnessing a significant shift,” said Mike Peterson, Founder of Science in Design. “Design is no longer viewed solely as an aesthetic discipline. It’s now being recognized as an essential contributor to mental, emotional, and even physical health. All of us at Science in Design are honored to lead this important movement.”

The event reflects growing interest in neuroaesthetics—the study of how beauty affects the brain—and biophilia, which emphasizes the importance of nature in design. These concepts are gaining increased recognition from researchers and practitioners across the design and health industries.

“Anyone who follows us knows we’re fans of Science in Design, the powerful relationship between design and health, and the profound implications this has for the home furnishings industry, for interior designers and architects, and for communities,” said Jane Dagmi, Managing Director of High Point by Design. “We look forward to reconvening around this subject in October and all the fresh knowledge and insights the symposium will bring.”
